MINUTES:
Minutes from the August meeting were sent out. A misspelled name was corrected. There were no objections and reading of the minutes was waived. Motion was made and approved to accept the minutes as written.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
A parent would like to start a new committee focused on supporting special education at Mount View with special events/activities. There was some discussion and it was determined that we would ask her to come to the next meeting to determine the need for this committee/liaison position.
Some parents have expressed concern regarding the traffic and student safety particularly at dismissal time and crossing between the middle school and the high school. At this time no students have permission to walk. The preference is that the children ride the buses. There is no staff to direct traffic and the police are not going to show up everyday. The traffic light should be in after property issues are resolved. It was recommended that, again, a bulletin be sent out to parents to review the dismissal procedures/traffic issues.
TREASURER’S REPORT
The August Treasurer’s Report was reviewed.
Income included: $231.85 membership dues, $1,611.28 Escrip and Box Tops, $3.04 miscellaneous, and $93.45 Spirit Wear.
Expenses included: ($187.00) 7th grade activities and $351.54 Teacher/Staff Appreciation.
The 2007-2008 Proposed Budget was also reviewed. We are starting with a $12,600 carryover this year. We hope to carry over about $3,100 at the end of the year. Anita Koehler motioned to approve the Budget. Tracy German seconded the motion. The budget was unanimously approved by the Board.
Deposits must be accompanied by an itemized list which should include last name and $ amount. JoAnn prefers that you put them in the treasurer’s box in the PTA room. Please turn them in ASAP.
Regarding fundraisers - magazine sales are down. We are looking at two possible new fundraisers. Yankee Candle – which can be piggybacked with Spirit Wear and Coffee sales (web based/auto-ship). Both of these fundraisers would require little or no parent volunteers.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Mrs. McKinley reported that she is thrilled to be at Mt. View Middle School. We have about 726-736 students this year. We are fully staffed. Back to School Night is coming up. We will have short presentation for the parents on the T.V. at which time we will present the budget and discuss fundraising ideas. The teachers will take the vote count on the budget. There will be a membership table out front.
We have had several fire drills so far this year.
VICE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Mrs. O’Byrne reported that they are calling the cafeteria the dining hall. Stress is being placed on proper table manners. We are hoping this improves the overall atmosphere and tone during lunch.
Student Recognition – line item (budget is $600). We sent 4 staff members to a conference on PDIS this summer. We came up with Talon Tokens as a motivator. We are also having a raffle drawing once a month. We are looking for parent support in the form of donations (gift cards/money) to fund the program.
Thanks to the PTA for the first day back breakfast.
TEAM REPORTS:
6TH GRADE TEAM:
Mrs. Bollard reported that they are busy organizing events and working on character building. The Science MSA is coming up. They are also building student confidence with Math and improving writing skills. This is a bigger group than last year. The team has started giving out Talon Tokens. They are looking for parents to take over store clerk position.
7th GRADE TEAM:
Melanie Poknis reported for 7th Grade. Thanks for the first day breakfast. Dr. Z retired. Joan Merza is full time now with 7th Grade now. We have some dates scheduled. Zoo Crew program – April 28th. We will begin the application process for that in February. We will do service learning at Mt. Pleasant May 8-9 (all students must have a meaningful Chesapeake Bay watershed experience in order to graduate). We will be at Centennial Park on June 4th. Will have a D.J. for that event. We are starting a new core program during 5th period. Students will visit a different academic subject each week for enrichment. We hope it will help with MSA’s.
8TH GRADE TEAM:
