EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
2008-09
September 15, 2008
CALL TO ORDER: 7:06 p.m.
ATTENDANCE:
There were 22 in attendance at this month’s meeting.
MINUTES:
There were no objections of the May minutes and reading of the minutes was waived. Motion was made and approved to accept the minutes as written.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Thanks to the committees for getting the year off to a great start. Thanks to all who helped with stuffing first day folders. Our Volunteer Coordinator, Gina Ellrich, has been busy. Kathy Lein has been working on escrip. Linda Rafferty and Donna Augustino have been working hard on Magazine Drive. Thanks to Stacey Allwein and Kaye Corbliss for the work on Membership. Parents as Partners has been busy.
There are some openings on the Calendar Committee, which meets at the Board of Education 3-4 times. Also, there are openings on Citizens Advisory which reports to the Board of Education (meets monthly).
There is a Conversations and Coffee with the Board of Education on Saturday October 11 from 9:30-11am.
We are still looking for someone to head Reflections here at Mount View.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Welcome Back!
Mount View ran a regional summer school program this summer.
There were some staff changes over the summer. Lorraine Quinn transferred to another school. Ron Somerville resigned. We added 3 new special education positions. We have a new GT resource teacher, Shelley Stout, who was at Clarksville Middle. We also have an additional World Language teacher for this year only, Tracey Mahanti. Eric Wagner is new in the P.E. department.
We appreciated the breakfast provided for staff. Thanks for the help with the display cases. We can use any help with those that parents can give.
Teacher Ease - All of 6th grade, 7th grade and some of 8th grade teachers are online with Teacher Ease. Once you are logged in with your email you’ll get a password. Thanks to the PTA for funding this at the last minute.
We are continuing with our PBIS initiatives. We were recognized as a banner school this summer.
Technology for Learning is our focus for the year. We will have increased instructional types of activities to help students use technology safely and responsibly.
School calendar dates are being kept up to date and will be posted in the weekly newsletter.
Building Use Forms - need to be signed by a PTA Officer and the Principal. You need to specify if you need heat or A/C. They need them at least a quarter ahead of usage date.
The custodians have a budget request. They are asking for folding long tables for us to use for our events. Ideally 8-10 tables at $50.81 each. We are also asking for funding to buy frames to display student artwork. Also, we are looking for a second refrigerator for the staff. Margie Malaney motioned that we purchase 5 tables and 5 art frames for a total of about $500 to be taken from discretionary fund from enrichment. Lori Carter seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT:
July, August, and September Treasurer’s Reports were reviewed.
July Income Included: $446.78 Escrip and Box Tops, $2.66 Miscellaneous, $72.00 Other Fundraiser Income.
July Expenses Included: $19.98 Website
August Income Included: no income in August
August Expenses Included: $850.00 Classroom Support/Resources, ($36.25) Insurance, Bonding and Liability, $38.12 PTA Supplies, $900.00 Online Grading Program.
September to date Income Includes: $14,205.00 Magazine Drive.
September to date Expenses Includes: $800.00 Student Recognition.
TEACHER REPORTS:
6th Grade: We have an exciting year planned. The students have adjusted wonderfully; it is a nice group of kids. In Reading we are checking levels. In English they are analyzing fiction and non-fiction. In social studies they are going over maps and globes. In Science they are learning the safety rules and beginning the weather unit. On October 16th the students will be going to the National Gallery and National Museum of History. Outdoor Education dates are May 18th through May 20th. There will be a lottery for picking parent volunteers for both field trips.
7th Grade: Melanie Poknis reported. We are looking for a class parent to help with Bulletin Boards. Field Trips planned included: Zoo Crew – May 4th (students apply to become members….we take 40). Service and Learning Date – May 7th and May 8th. This involves manual labor at Mt. Pleasant Farm. Centennial Park – June 10th. There will be a motivational speaker/D.J.
8th Grade: Donna McDonald reported. We welcome all volunteers. Call or email us if you can help.
Related Arts: Shelly Williams reported. The P.E. Department will have the Turkey Trot on November 24th. We welcome all parents. Intramurals will start soon. We are hosting the G.T. band auditions in October. Chorus is now during the school day this year. The band/orchestra winter concert is scheduled for December 17th. It will be at Marriott’s Ridge. We will be having “Related Arts Idols” (student of the month). Thanks for the wonderful breakfast
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Membership: To date we have 530 total PTA members (27 are staff). Our goal was 500.
Ways and Means:
Magazine Drive- The fundraiser is off to a good start. We took in 14,000 in sales last Tuesday. There are two more turn in Tuesdays. We will have a Scientist on Oct. 2nd (1st period). 127 students earned this for their magazine sales. Also, 51 students qualified for the Hummer limo ride. Date to be determined and it will be after school hours.
Spirit Wear- Info will come home in progress reports envelope on October 2nd.
School Support and Interaction:
Volunteer Coordinator- working on the list of volunteers to give to committees.
Parents as Partners- sponsored a Differential Learning speaker and coffee and conversation. A survey has also been sent out to determine some activities to sponsor.
Family/Staff Event- There has been discussion of having a parent/staff activity this year.
Student Support Activities:
6th Grade- Planning on going to Adventure Park on October 17th.
7th Grade- Will have an event in October – Roller skating.
8th Grade- No dates yet. 8th Graders have been invited to Marriott’s Ridge on October 2nd to hear a motivational speaker.
Honor Roll- 1st assembly is November 21st. Each team is also doing Student of the Month.
Spirit Team:
We met the second Tuesday after school started. We supported the magazine drive by making posters. We had 16 students help with this. We meet 1st and 3rd Tuesdays after school in Mr. Mitchell’s art room.

OLD BUSINESS:
No old business to discuss.
NEW BUSINESS:
There is a group at Marriott’s Ridge that is working hard to get the county to push the school arrival/departure times for the middle school and high school further apart to alleviate the congestion and traffic issues.
