EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
2008-09
October 20, 2008
CALL TO ORDER: 2:45 p.m.
ATTENDANCE:
There were 18 in attendance at this month’s meeting.
MINUTES:
There were no objections of the September minutes and reading of the minutes was waived. Motion was made and approved to accept the minutes as written.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
- We had a successful magazine drive. Thank you! Big rewards happened as a result of the magazine drive. The students were very excited. PTA will stay with the same company next year.
- The books have been audited from last year. They are going to be sent to the county now.
- Volunteers are filling volunteer positions. PBIS can use some help. Will discuss more with teacher reports.
- Daycare is available at Marriott’s Ridge. Contact Anita for more information.
- Marriott’s Ridge is having a Citrus Sale.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
- Anita Kohler and Mrs. McKinley went to the Principal/PTA President meeting. The theme was cultural proficiency.
- We are partnering with Loyola College this year. We have some observation internships and some full student teaching. It’s a nice program.
- An e-school newsletter went out about supplies. There is concern that there is so much variance between schools. We want to reassure you that the staff has been monitoring it and trying to keep a lid on the amount of supplies required.
- Our professional development focus for staff this year is on integrating more technology. This is a benefit for the students as there is a lot of opportunity. We have purchased LCD projectors.
- We are encouraging our students to participate in a mock presidential election. A letter will go out. We will let the student’s text their vote in to a Mt. View site during Falcon Time. If the student does not have a cell phone they can go to a computer lab to vote. The students will also be voting for student government.
- The SIT meeting has been moved to November 3rd at 8am.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT:
· Thanks to the PTA for Talon Tokens. We appreciate the funding for this.
- October 31st will be our first Sky Flyer Day.
- Traditionally, the PTA has funded the organizational skills program. Our after school organization club. We are asking for this funding again this year.
TREASURER’S REPORT:
September and October Treasurer’s Reports were reviewed.
September Income Included: $3,156.00 Membership Dues, $12.81 Escrip and Box Tops, $3.90 Miscellaneous, $22,582.00 Magazine Drive.
September Expenses Included: $775.42 Magazine Drive-Sales Expense, $800.00 Student Recognition (PBIS tokens).
October Income Included: $9,655.97 Magazine Drive.
October Expenses Included: $134.48 Teacher/Staff Appreciation, $58.45 Guidance Office Support/Resources, $8,768.84 Magazine Drive-Cost of Goods Sold, $360.00 Magazine Drive-Sales Expense.
TEACHER REPORTS:
6th Grade:
- We had our first field trip to the Smithsonian, Museum of Natural History and Art Museum. The students were very well behaved.
- We have assessments coming up. The end of quarter is approaching. Report cards come out on November 13.
- American Education Week is November 17 – 21. Monday is set aside for parents to observe in 6th grade.
- We will have service learning beginning in December. We have a fundraising and educational partnership with Tim Gregory with Kenya Connect.
7th Grade:
- In Science, the students are completing their cell cities. They are due next Monday.
- We also will be having quarterly assessments in the next two weeks.
- Our service learning will kick off in March. The students will be working at the Conservancy.
- Zoo crew is May 4th.
- The vocabulary books came in. They should all be distributed by next week.
8th Grade:
- The students went to see a motivational speaker at the High School in the beginning of October. The speaker was a professional skateboarder who talked about life choices.
- We are also beginning the quarterly assessments.
- We will be doing service learning in the second quarter. The students will participate in the Energy Star Campaign for an energy conservation unit. We encourage the parents to get involved. We will also be doing a children’s book for Johns Hopkins.
PBIS: The premise of this program is rewarding /recognizing positive behavior in the students. We will have our first Sky Flyer Day during the last hour of school on Oct. 31st. We can use parent volunteers for additional supervision during these events.
Related Arts:
- We have an Art Show coming up (6th Grade Showcase).
- We had a fantastic 6th grade field trip with phenomenal parent volunteers.
- Band hosted GT auditions on Oct. 17th. 14 MVMS students were chosen. The first rehearsal is Wednesday.
- We appreciate the art frames that the PTA is going to buy for rotating art work.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Ways and Means:
- Magazine Drive- We exceeded our goal. We had hoped for $35,000 in sales – actual so far is $42,000 ($10,000 more than last year). Participation rose to 40%. 6th and 7th grade sold the most.
- Escrip- Oct. 11th was our actual start date. Food Lion and Martin’s have been added this year. We are budgeted for $5,000.
School Support and Interaction:
- Parents as Partners- The next Coffee and Conversation is November 20th.
Staff Appreciation:
- We are providing something every month. Also will be providing a lunch during American Education Week. There will be a dinner provided during conferences on Mon. 11/24 and lunch provided for the staff on 11/25.
Student Support Activities:
- 6th Grade- 66 students went to Adventure Park.
- 7th Grade- We had our bowling party last Friday. 28 students participated. Everyone had fun
- 8th Grade- No dates yet. 8th Graders have been invited to Marriott’s Ridge on October 2nd to hear a motivational speaker.
- Honor Roll- The assemblies are set for November 21st.
- Cultural Arts- 8th grade will do the Chesapeake Bay Program and Shakespeare. Other possible activities include World of Robotics (ties in to Math/Science) and a storyteller (ties in to social studies).
- After School Programs- Our 5 after school programs begin next week and will go for 6 sessions. The clubs are: Organizational Club, Knitting, Chess, Hip Hop Dance Club and Drama (starts after the new year).
Spirit Team:
- The Back to School Dance is November 7th.
DELEGATES REPORT:
No report at this time.
OLD BUSINESS:
High School parents would like the school arrival/departure times staggered for the Middle School and High School and plan to bring it up to the county. What do our parents and staff think of this? There were several different opinions with no strong group consensus for or against this at this time.
NEW BUSINESS:
None at this time.
